The driver of the Red Bull Junior Team claimed his third victory of the year on Saturday in the Sprint race, following a flawless start from pole position.
On Sunday, he added another point after a challenging race, hindered by a lack of pace and a technical issue.
"I’ll focus on Saturday's win and the good points, although today we were lacking speed. This break is good for us to keep working and come back stronger."
Pepe Martí has returned to the top of the podium at the Hungaroring circuit. The Spanish driver of the Red Bull Junior Team delivered an impeccable performance this Saturday to take victory in the Sprint Race, and finished the weekend with a new top-10 result in the Sunday’s long race, consolidating his sixth place in the overall standings with 97 points. Martí ends the Spa-Budapest double-header with a significant points haul before the summer break.
In Saturday's Sprint, Pepe started from pole position due to the reversed grid based on his 10th place in Friday's qualifying, and he made the most of the opportunity. After a great start, he maintained the lead from the first corner and managed the pace at the front, holding off pressure from the second-placed driver during the first part of the race. When he had created a gap, an on-track incident with six laps to go brought out the safety car, and the race was restarted with just three laps remaining.
In the decisive final laps, Martí had to defend once more from the driver in second, who applied pressure after a small mistake. However, the Spanish driver handled the situation with maturity, resisting the attack and crossing the finish line in first place, celebrating his third victory of the season (after Bahrain and Spielberg).
On Sunday, in the long race, Martí started from 10th place, his position in qualifying. The Barcelona-born driver again showed strong racecraft early on, gaining positions despite the struggles with his car’s speed to stay near the front. An unfortunate pit stop cost him valuable time, and later, an issue with the delta during a virtual safety car period deprived him of any chance of finishing in 5th or 6th. He ultimately crossed the finish line in 10th place, adding another point to his tally.
“It’s been a good weekend with the victory in the Sprint race, although today in the long race we struggled with pace. We had trouble extracting good performance, and starting from 10th position made it difficult anyway. I had an issue during the virtual safety car, where the delta didn’t work properly and we lost three seconds to the other competitors and two and a half seconds to sixth place. In that sense, I’m a bit disappointed because it was something completely out of my control,” says Pepe.
“However, I’m focusing on the fact that we achieved a solid win on Saturday, in a very commanding way, with great control and a lot of maturity. Also, we got the point for the fastest lap. I’m happy about that, but it’s clear that we need to take a small step forward in other areas if we want to be fighting for more.”
“Overall, it’s been a good weekend, with good points, but now I’m happy that the break is coming so I can not only rest a bit, but also continue working on improvements and return to action in Monza.”
Formula 2 will return to the track from September 5th to 7th at the Italian circuit.
