The Spanish driver finished eighth in the sprint race, gaining positions to secure his first points of the season in Melbourne.
Sunday’s feature race was cancelled due to heavy rain at the Albert Park circuit.
"First, we have the Bahrain test, so we hope to resolve the issues and arrive at the next two races with greater confidence. The goal is to fight for strong positions throughout the year."
The start of the 2025 FIA Formula 2 season in Melbourne was impacted by poor weather, which disrupted the weekend’s schedule. Pepe Martí finished eighth in Saturday’s Sprint race, securing his first points of the year. However, Sunday’s feature race was cancelled due to heavy rain at Albert Park.
On Friday, several drivers and teams faced similar technical issues, prompting the organisers to hold a 15-minute shakedown to ensure they were resolved. In qualifying, these problems prevented Pepe Martí from fighting for a stronger grid position.
On Saturday, in the Sprint race, he started 11th and, after a great start and a solid performance, remained in the top 10 throughout. He ultimately crossed the finish line in eighth place, earning his first points of the season.
"It was an unexpected weekend, not because of the result, but due to the technical issues in qualifying that stopped us from being where we deserved. We should have qualified between P5 and P8, but we ended up 16th. With the penalties, we started 11th in the Sprint, and after a good start, some battles, and overtakes, we finished eighth. We made progress, and despite the electrical issues with the engine on Friday, we managed to score a point," Martí explained.
On Sunday, heavy rain prevented the feature race from taking place. Despite several attempts to start the race, conditions did not guarantee driver safety, leading the organisers to cancel it.
“We were hoping for a strong race in wet conditions, where we usually perform well. However, the rain was so intense that it became impossible to run. Now, we need to focus on Bahrain and Jeddah to make the most of our opportunities. First, we have the Bahrain test, where we aim to resolve our issues and arrive better prepared. The goal is to fight in competitive positions throughout the season,” Martí stated.
With this season opener, the Red Bull Junior Team driver remains optimistic about the upcoming rounds. Formula 2 will return from 11th to 13th April at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain, followed by the Jeddah round the following week. Before that, from 26th to 28th March, Pepe will take part in the Bahrain test to fine-tune his performance and continue scoring points in the category.
